New Delhi / Washington:
The United States military has begun dismantling and destroying parts of its own military infrastructure while withdrawing troops from bases in northeast Syria, amid escalating conflict between Kurdish forces and the Turkish army in the region.

According to reports from Syrian state media, US forces carried out controlled strikes on facilities at an airbase in northern Syria before evacuating personnel. The move is aimed at preventing military equipment and infrastructure from falling into the hands of rival armed groups as American troops pull back from the area.

US Bombards Base in Al-Hasaka Province

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that US forces targeted their own military installation near Tal Tamr, in Syria’s Al-Hasaka province. The base reportedly included landing facilities used by transport aircraft. The controlled demolition took place as part of preparations to vacate the site.

The region has witnessed intense fighting in recent weeks, with clashes involving US-backed Kurdish forces and the Turkish military, following Ankara’s cross-border operation in northern Syria.

Withdrawal Linked to US Policy Shift

On October 7, the United States announced its decision to withdraw troops from parts of northeast Syria. Shortly afterward, Turkey launched a military operation, stating that its objective was to clear the area of groups it considers terrorist organizations.

The US administration clarified at the time that it would not support or participatein Turkey’s military campaign, while also emphasizing the need to safeguard American personnel stationed in the conflict zone.

Measures Taken to Protect US Forces

US Defense Secretary Mark Esper later confirmed that approximately 1,000 additional US troops were repositioned or withdrawn from northern Syria. The decision, officials said, was taken to ensure that American soldiers would not become trapped between competing military forces operating in the region.

President Donald Trump, responding to concerns about abandoning Kurdish allies who had fought alongside US forces against the Islamic State (IS), stated that Washington hoped to maintain cooperation with Kurdish groups in other capacities moving forward.

Strategic Implications

Military analysts note that destroying infrastructure during withdrawals is a standard military practice designed to prevent adversaries from using abandoned facilities. The US drawdown from northeast Syria reflects a broader recalibration of American involvement in the conflict, even as the security situation on the ground remains volatile.
